Five glass negatives, joined into one wide view, make this a panorama of the Manhattan waterfront as seen from Brooklyn across the East River. Made around 1901 by the Detroit Photographic Company, whose large-format views were sold to tourists and collectors, it shows the river busy with boats, a reminder of how heavily freight and passenger traffic moved between the two shores. The record notes painted skies and retouched glass, techniques photographers used to balance bright water and cloud against the dense city below. Plates measuring 18 by 22 inches were built for fine detail, so the rooftops and riverfront can still be read closely more than a century later.
