Five large glass negatives, each 18 by 22 inches, join into one wide view of New York seen from Brooklyn across the East River. Made around 1901 by the Detroit Publishing Company, the panorama was pieced together from separate exposures, with the sky painted in and the glass varnished and retouched by hand. The boats on the river point to the waterway's constant traffic in shipping and ferries, and the view captures the Manhattan waterfront just before the taller towers of later decades reshaped its skyline.
