Only the right-hand portion of a larger panorama of Cedar Grove Cemetery in Flushing, Queens, survives in this view, recorded on a glass negative measuring 18 by 22 inches. Photographer A.H. Bowen made the full panorama in August 1905 for the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American towns, landscapes and institutions. Mammoth plates like this one recorded wide scenes in fine detail, so the headstones and grounds can be studied closely. The negative reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
