John Evers, the second baseman whose quick play helped form the famous Chicago Cubs double-play trio with Joe Tinker and Frank Chance, is pictured here in the uniform of the Boston Nationals, the club he joined in 1913. The photograph is dated to around October 2, 1914, a season in which Boston won the National League pennant and then the World Series, a run that earned the team the nickname Miracle Braves. The print comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photographer whose work at the Library of Congress documents sports and public life in the early twentieth century.
