The picture shows Johnny Evers of the Boston Braves and Eddie Plank of the Philadelphia Athletics shaking hands on October 10, 1914, the opening day of that year's World Series. Evers was the Braves' second baseman and a member of the famous Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance double-play combination, while Plank was among the Athletics' best left-handed pitchers. The Braves went on to sweep the heavily favored Athletics in four games, one of the biggest upsets of the early century. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news pictures taken for newspapers.
