John Titus was a right-handed pitcher who spent his career with the Boston Nationals, and this glass negative captures him in the uniform of a team that was then known in the press by its nickname, the Braves, or simply as Boston. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the trove of news photographs assembled by the Bain News Service in New York, which supplied newspapers with images of ballplayers, politicians and events during the early 1910s. Its date of about 1913 places it in the years when baseball photography was becoming a regular feature of daily papers, and portraits like this one were made for quick use in print.
