Walter "Rabbit" Maranville, the slight, acrobatic shortstop, is the subject of this glass negative from the Bain News Service, dated 1914. That year he played for the Boston Nationals, the club that climbed from last place in midsummer to win the National League pennant and then the World Series, a run that made the team the talk of baseball. Bain's staff photographed athletes and news events for newspapers and magazines, so the plate offers a working portrait of a player at the center of that season. Glass negatives like this one were the standard medium for news photography of the period.
