Walt Dickson was a right-handed pitcher who worked for the Boston Nationals in the early 1910s, and this glass negative catches him in the team's uniform at about the time he was with the club. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news photographs that Bain News Service sold to newspapers and magazines in New York from the early 1900s on. Those pictures were made quickly for daily papers, so portraits of ballplayers like this one give a sense of how the sport was covered before the wire photo era. The date of 1913 rests on research by the Society for American Baseball Research, not on a note written at the time.
