Lake Vista is one of the quieter water views in Elizabeth Park, the public garden on the west side of Hartford, Connecticut, which was developed in the 1890s as a place for plants and leisure. This glass plate negative from about 1905 was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed towns and landscapes across the United States and sold the views to travelers, publishers and businesses. Its surviving plate records the park at the start of the twentieth century, when it was still growing into the rose gardens and planted grounds it is known for today. The "2170 B" marking on the negative is a reminder of how these views were cataloged in large commercial files.
