Water lilies cover the surface of the pond at Elizabeth Park in Hartford, Connecticut, in this glass-plate negative from about 1905. The park was created from land given to the city in the 1890s by Charles Pond and his sister Adele, and by the early twentieth century its gardens drew visitors from across the region. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed towns, parks and scenery across the country, made this view as part of a large body of work on American places. Its 8 by 10 inch plate captures a quiet corner of a city landscape at a time when public parks were valued as places for leisure and civic pride.
