The subject is the Hartford Life Insurance Company's office building in Hartford, Connecticut, photographed around 1907. Hartford was home to many insurers and became known as one of the country's insurance centers, and the company's offices were part of that business landscape. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American cities and buildings in the early twentieth century. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative is cracked across the center and has been taped to a second sheet of glass, a visible reminder of its handling over the decades.
