Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company, founded in Hartford in 1846, was one of the earliest life insurers in the United States, and this view records its office building around 1907. By then Hartford had become known as an insurance center, with several large companies headquartered along its downtown streets. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, and its photographers often documented city streets and commercial buildings for sale as views and postcards. The picture offers a useful record of how a corporate office looked in the early twentieth century.
