Unlike most of the street-trade pictures in this set, this one shows girls among the boys. The record notes that the newsgirls mingle and jostle the boys both inside the Hartford Times office and out in its yard. Lewis Hine took it in March 1909 while documenting child labor for the National Child Labor Committee, which used his photographs to argue for limits on young workers. Newsboys selling papers on city streets were a common sight then, and the scene here suggests how the work drew in children of both sexes.
