Two pacers, Sleepy George and Lucy, are the subjects here, racing for a $1,000 purse at Hartford, Connecticut, on August 22, 1878, which sets this sheet apart from the firm's many other racing scenes. Currier & Ives built a large business on sporting subjects like this one, and their trotting and pacing prints reached a broad audience of people who followed harness racing in newspapers and at local tracks. The drawing is credited to J. Cameron. Pacing, in which a horse moves both legs on one side together, was a gait that breeders and drivers of the period prized, and the print offers a window into how these contests were presented to the public.
