This hand-colored lithograph depicts the assault on Chapultepec, the hilltop fortress on the edge of Mexico City that American troops under Gen. Winfield Scott stormed on September 13, 1847. Its title promises Mexicans "routed with great loss," the kind of triumphant claim common in the popular war prints that publishers rushed out while the campaign was still news. Printed by E.B. & E.C. Kellogg of New York and Hartford, Connecticut, with D. Needham of Buffalo also credited, it likely dates to 1847 or 1848, as the war was winding down.
