Printed in imitation of oil paintings, this color lithograph of Andrew Johnson came from Bingham & Dodd, a Hartford firm, and was entered for copyright in 1866, the year after Johnson succeeded Abraham Lincoln following Lincoln's assassination. Portraits like this circulated widely during Johnson's presidency, which was dominated by bitter disputes with Congress over Reconstruction of the South. Johnson's public standing was sharply divided at the time, and a printed likeness like this one helped meet the demand for images of the man at the center of those quarrels.
