The Latin motto *Post nubila Phoebus*, roughly "after the clouds, sunshine," is inscribed on the emblem of this Memorial Arch in Hartford, Connecticut. Memorial arches like this were common in American towns around 1905, often raised to honor soldiers or mark civic occasions. The view was made as a glass dry plate negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced thousands of commercial views of American cities and landscapes. The collection came to the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
