The Samuel Colt Memorial stands as a monument to the Hartford firearms maker who died in 1862, after building the Colt revolver into one of the best-known arms of the nineteenth century. This c1907 glass dry plate negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company, records the monument as it appeared in the early twentieth century, when the company was documenting American towns and landmarks. Colt's factory made Hartford a center of industrial manufacturing, and the memorial reflects how the city chose to honor one of its most prominent industrialists.
