The record identifies this view as a close-up of the Colt Memorial in Hartford, Connecticut, rather than a full view of the monument, so the frame asks us to look at its ornamental detail. The memorial honors Caldwell Hart Colt (1858-1894), a member of the family behind the Colt firearms company, whose founder Samuel Colt had made Hartford a center of arms manufacturing. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative around 1900 to 1906, when it was documenting American towns and landmarks for its commercial views. The plate's catalog number and later gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado help trace its path into the Library of Congress collection.
