Hartford's Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Arch stands in Bushnell Park, a granite monument to the Connecticut men who served in the Civil War. Architect George Keller designed it, and it was dedicated in 1886, about two decades after the war ended. This c1905 view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely and documented American towns and landmarks in the early twentieth century. Its wide, arched form, set against the park, shows how civic memorials of that era were meant to be seen as part of a public landscape.
