Colt's Armory in Hartford, Connecticut, is the subject here: the sprawling brick factory complex where Samuel Colt's firearms company built revolvers and other guns. The Detroit Publishing Company captured it as a glass-plate negative in the early 1900s, a period when the company was producing large numbers of views of American industrial sites and cities for sale as photographic prints and travel catalogs. Colt had been manufacturing revolvers in Hartford since the 1850s, and by the turn of the century the armory was among the best-known gun factories in the country. The image records a working industrial landscape at a moment when mass production was reshaping American manufacturing.
