The monument commemorates Caldwell Hart Colt (1858-1894), a member of the Colt family whose firearms company shaped Hartford's industrial growth in the nineteenth century. This glass-plate negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company and dated about 1905, records the memorial as a freestanding public monument in the city. Glass negatives like this one, which measure 8 by 10 inches, were the standard way to capture architecture and outdoor sculpture before the Detroit firm became known for its color prints. The negative's survival through a 1949 gift shows how such plates were kept as local records of civic life.
