Few houses in Hartford tie together industry and domestic life as closely as this one, which the record identifies as the residence of Mrs. Samuel Colt, given as Elizabeth H. Colt. She was the widow of the gunmaker whose firm helped make Hartford a major manufacturing center. The Detroit Publishing Company, a large commercial photography business in the early twentieth century, recorded the house on an 8 x 10 inch glass negative around 1907. The picture offers a window onto how families built on industrial fortunes lived in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
