Early automobiles share the frame with the civic building in this view of Hartford's City Hall, a detail the catalog records as a subject alongside the architecture. The glass negative is one of many the Detroit Publishing Company made across the United States in the early twentieth century, when the company's large-format plates documented towns and cities for commercial sale. The date is only a rough estimate, but the scene fits the years when motorcars were moving from novelty to ordinary street traffic, and the contrast between the stately masonry hall and the new machines is worth studying.
