The Aetna Insurance Company's Hartford office, photographed around 1907, shows a building belonging to one of the city's most prominent financial institutions. Aetna was founded in Hartford in 1853 and grew into one of the largest insurers in the country, helping earn the city its nickname, the Insurance City. The picture was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large-format views of towns, businesses and landscapes across the United States in the early twentieth century. Its 8 by 10 inch glass negative records the sharp detail that made such commercial views useful to companies and travelers alike.
