The Hartford Fire Insurance Company, founded in 1810, was among the earliest fire insurers in the United States and helped make Hartford a center of the insurance trade. This view records the company's office building during the years when the city was often called the insurance capital of America. The Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document cities and businesses in the early twentieth century, made it as a large 8 x 10 inch glass negative, a format that preserves architectural detail more fully than smaller plates.
