The house Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, built on Farmington Avenue in Hartford is the subject here, a steep-roofed, richly ornamented Victorian home that he and his family occupied from 1874 to 1891. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed American towns and landmarks for postcards and publications, made this glass negative in the late 1910s, roughly three decades after the author left. By then the house drew visitors interested in the writer who had lived there, and it is now operated as a museum. The glass plate shows some streaks and surface blemishes from age, which are typical of negatives from this period.
