A railroad bridge lies in ruins, its span broken and fallen, in this stereograph from the Civil War Photograph Collection. Its record dates the exposure to May 25, 1864, a period when both Union and Confederate forces routinely wrecked rail lines and bridges to slow enemy movements and supplies. The card was printed later by The War Photograph & Exhibition Company of Hartford, Connecticut, which sold views like this one as paired images for stereoscopic viewers. Because the print was made decades after the war, it reflects how the conflict was remembered and marketed as much as how it looked when the bridge was destroyed.
