Al Frueh's caricature of Marie Dressler is a linocut, a relief print cut into a block and inked, and it was made as plate 31 for *Stage Folk*, a 1922 book of his theatrical caricatures published in New York. Dressler, a stage and film comedian, had risen from vaudeville and Broadway to film stardom by the early 1920s. Frueh's bold, simplified lines exaggerate her features and expression, a style that suited the sharp, affectionate portraits of performers he drew for the book.
