Among the plates in *Stage Folk*, this one turns the caricaturist's eye on Julia Marlowe, the actress whose name is printed beneath the portrait. Marlowe, born in 1865, was among the best-known American interpreters of Shakespeare in the early twentieth century, and she and her husband, E. H. Sothern, toured the classics together for years. Al Frueh, the artist, was a New York illustrator known for exaggerated, character-driven drawings of stage figures. This color linocut, signed on the block, shows how printmaking could render a performer's personality in bold, simplified lines.
