Alfred Frueh's caricature of William Collier, the American stage comedian, appears as plate 16 in *Stage Folk*, a 1922 book of theatrical caricatures published in New York by Lieber & Lewis. Collier, born in 1866, spent a long career on the American stage, and Frueh exaggerates the features and bearing that made his comic performances easy to recognize. The print is a linocut, a medium that favors bold, simplified outlines over fine detail. Signed on the block, it shows how illustrators of the early 1920s turned stage personalities into portraits for a general readership.
