Alfred Frueh's color linocut of William Faversham, the stage actor, appears as plate 5 in *Stage Folk*, a 1922 book of theatrical caricatures published in New York by Lieber & Lewis. Faversham (1868-1940) was a leading man on the American stage for decades, and Frueh's exaggerated features capture the polished, self-assured manner that made him a familiar name to theatergoers. The book's pairing of drawings with a cast-of-characters contents page reflects its aim of presenting performers as types as much as individuals. Linocut was a bold, simplified medium, and the print's flat areas of color show how caricature of the period borrowed from printmaking to make a face instantly recognizable.
