This half-length portrait shows William Young McAllister, who lived from 1812 to 1896, seated and captured as a stereoscopic daguerreotype. Made sometime between 1850 and 1860, it uses a pair of nearly identical exposures that, when viewed through a stereoscope, produce a single image with apparent depth. That format was especially popular in the 1850s, when families and collectors filled parlors with such views. The image preserves the sharp, mirror-like surface and fine detail characteristic of the daguerreotype process, which was then only about two decades old.
