Two young men sit together in this quarter-plate daguerreotype, identified as William Hazard Field, born 1833, and Moses Augustus Field, born 1831. The date, April 1850, is written inside the case, which has a scroll-patterned design typical of the hinged cases used to protect daguerreotypes. Daguerreotypes were made on silvered copper and viewed at an angle, so the image seems to float on a mirror-like surface that shifts with the light. The photographer is unidentified, but the portrait is a clear record of two members of the Field family, given to the Library of Congress by family descendants in 1997.
