Taken in Nuremberg on September 13, 1841, according to an inscription on the back, this daguerreotype pictures William Young McAllister three-quarter length and facing the camera, in what the note places as the garden of a convent. Only a few years after Daguerre announced his process in 1839, portraits like this were still a novelty, and early exposures in bright light could take minutes, so sitters had to hold very still. The name Heller etched on the plate points to the maker or studio, and the piece is now held by the Library of Congress as part of the Marian S. Carson collection, acquired in 1998.
