Made in a convent garden in Nuremberg, Germany, this daguerreotype shows William Young McAllister in a three-quarter length portrait, facing the camera. The date, September 13, 1841, and the location are inscribed on the back, and the maker's name, Heller, is etched into the plate itself. Daguerreotypes had been announced in France only in 1839, and by the early 1840s portrait photography was spreading through Europe and America. Exposures still took minutes, so the sitter had to hold very still, and the sharp, mirror-like surface of the plate gives the portrait its fine detail.
