Sgt. William Carney appears in this head-and-shoulders portrait, facing the camera, made around 1900. It is part of a set of Medal of Honor recipients gathered by Daniel Murray, a Black librarian at the Library of Congress who documented African American military service. Carney earned the medal for his actions at Fort Wagner, South Carolina, in July 1863, when he carried the colors of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry after the color bearer fell and kept the flag aloft despite his wounds. He is widely recognized as the first Black American to receive the Medal of Honor.
