This glass negative pairs Herbert Hoover with the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce, the automakers' trade association, in a picture dated May 2, 1929. Hoover had taken office only weeks earlier, in March of that year, and the auto industry was among the most visible sectors of the economy in the late 1920s. The National Photo Company, which produced the negative, recorded Washington life during this period. Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library of Congress in 1947, and its streaks and blemishes come from deterioration in the original coating.
