This sheet pairs a Portuguese missionary, Luis Frois, with emperors and kings, and its labels spell Madagascar as "Madagarasu." The design bears the signature of Yōshū Chikanobu and the engraver Hori Kame, along with a seal dated the fourth month of Meiji 12 (1879). The surviving sheets form only part of the original triptych, so the full lineup of rulers is not preserved. Such mixed groupings and misspellings reflect how Japanese readers were still learning the names and standing of foreign monarchs in the 1870s.
