Built at the Cramp shipyard in Philadelphia and commissioned in 1893, the U.S.S. *New York* was among the steel cruisers that helped the U.S. Navy grow into a modern fighting force. During the Spanish-American War she served as the flagship of Rear Admiral William T. Sampson, including the 1898 operations off Santiago de Cuba. This large glass-plate negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its broad photographic record of American places and people around the turn of the century.
