The Eccles Hotel stood in Glengariff, a village on the shore of Bantry Bay in County Cork, where a mild climate and wooded hills drew Victorian travelers. This view dates from roughly 1890 to 1900, when tourism to southwest Ireland was growing. It was made by the photochrom process, a Swiss method that added hand-applied color to a photographic print, and the Detroit Publishing Company offered it in its catalog of Irish views. The soft, painterly tints were meant to resemble watercolor.
