Killarney's Great Southern Hotel stood among the lakes and mountains of County Kerry, a town that drew tourists from Britain and America through the late nineteenth century. This print is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland that produced color images from photographs, and it was distributed in the United States by the Detroit Publishing Company. Its catalog number places it among the company's views of Ireland, which were sold to travelers and armchair readers who wanted a picture of the places they had heard about. The hotel's broad facade and carefully kept grounds show how the town presented itself to visitors arriving by rail and coach.
