Rather than a scene, this is a map that places Yellowstone National Park within the wider region around it, with most of the park in northwestern Wyoming and its edges reaching into Montana and Idaho. Yellowstone was set aside in 1872, when President Ulysses S. Grant signed the bill that made it the first national park in the United States and the first in the world. Maps like this one helped visitors and early managers understand the park's roads, lakes, and thermal areas, and they show how its boundaries meet neighboring towns and public lands.
