Its slogan, "Jovenes! Vosotros sois la esperanza del mañana" ("Youth! You are the hope of tomorrow"), speaks directly to young people, and the poster was issued in 1936 by Juventudes Libertarias, the youth organization linked to Spain's anarchist labor movement. That year, the country plunged into civil war after the military uprising in July, and political groups on both sides produced large lithographs like this one to rally supporters, recruit volunteers, and build morale. Posters of this kind were pasted on walls and street corners, so they reached workers and students as well as militants. Its color lithograph format and bold appeal to the next generation make it a useful window onto how the Republican side tried to frame the struggle as a future worth fighting for.
