Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, is the subject here, shown across two large glass negatives that were meant to be joined into a single wide view. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that issued photographs of American scenery for sale to tourists and railroads, produced many such panoramas around 1898. Its photographers worked with mammoth-plate cameras, which made sharp detail possible across a broad field, so the lake country stands out with crisp shorelines and distant tree lines. The pair of negatives survives in the Library of Congress collection, and the firm's numbering on each plate shows how the company catalogued its work.
