The Passaconaway Inn in York, Maine, is the subject here, a hotel set near the water in a coastal town that drew summer visitors in the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the United States and sold views of scenic places and resorts, made this glass-plate negative, and its catalog number is recorded on the plate. Resort hotels like this one were a central part of the seaside tourism boom of that period, when rail travel brought city families to the Maine coast for the summer. The picture pairs a waterfront with a hotel, so it shows both the working shoreline and the leisure trade that grew up alongside it.
