The Passaconaway Inn stood on the Maine coast in York, a town whose harbor and beaches drew summer visitors from Boston and beyond in the early 1900s. This view is a large glass-plate negative, made between 1900 and 1910, and it captures the waterfront setting that made such hotels popular with vacationers escaping city heat. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many of these views for travel and postcard markets, documented resorts like this one across the country. The negative later came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
