The Nubble is a small rocky islet off Cape Neddick in York, Maine, and its lighthouse stands at the water's edge, guiding ships past the ledges along this stretch of coast. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made and sold travel views from the 1890s through the early 1900s, recorded many such scenes for tourists who were arriving at Maine's seaside resorts by rail. Set against the open water, the image shows how the working light and the surrounding shore appealed to summer visitors as much as to mariners.
