The caption on this glass negative reads "Robert's 'Abbot-Detroit,'" a label that pairs a name with the Michigan city, though the Bain News Service noted that such titles came from its own unverified notes. The negative is dated 1910 and belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain's agency supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its glass plates, usually 5 by 7 inches or smaller, offer a sharp record of people and events of the period. Detroit was then a fast-growing industrial city, which gives the picture useful context.
