Jack Onslow appears here as a Detroit player in the American League, and the Library of Congress dates the picture to 1912, a season in which the Tigers reached the World Series. The image is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photo service that supplied pictures to newspapers across the country. Its caption card and the Society for American Baseball Research's later research help anchor the subject and date, which makes it a useful record of how team portraits and player images moved from the ballpark into the daily press.
